Weel automatically applies an expense category to your card transactions, working through a fixed set of rules until one applies. This keeps your coding consistent and saves you from categorising every transaction manually, whether or not AI categorisation is on. You can always change the category before you submit or update the expense.
How It Works
- Locked default category. If your admin has set a default category on the budget, Weel always uses it, ahead of your own rules and Weel AI.
- Categorisation rules. Any automatic categorisation rule you've created for a merchant, or a subscription categorisation rule for a subscription card, applies next, as long as the category is still enabled and available on the budget.
- Single category on the budget. If the transaction's budget only has one category to choose from, Weel applies it automatically, AI on or off.
- Merchant history. If you've transacted with this merchant before, Weel reuses the category from last time, regardless of your AI setting.
- Weel AI suggestion. With AI categorisation on and nothing above matched, Weel AI suggests a category based on the merchant, your recent coding history for them, and the budget's available categories.
- MCC fallback. With AI categorisation off and nothing above matched, Weel uses the merchant's MCC (merchant category code) to apply a category, if your business has mapped one.
- Nothing matched. If none of the above apply, the category field is left blank for you to fill in.
Good to know
- You can turn AI categorisation on or off in Account Settings > AI and Automations, under the Auto-Categorise toggle. See How to use AI Auto-Categorisation for that toggle and for what an AI-suggested category looks like on a transaction.
