Weel is rolling out a tax rate field on expenses, a structured value like 10% GST or GST Free, replacing free-text GST entry. Rollout depends on your business and expense type, since cards, bills, and reimbursements turn on independently. Picking the rate your accounting software uses keeps your books accurate and avoids failed exports.
How It Works
- Tax rate field: Choose a structured rate from a dropdown on each card, bill, or reimbursement line item, instead of typing a GST amount.
- Synced from your accounting software: Connect Xero, QuickBooks, MYOB, NetSuite, or Business Central and rates sync automatically; Weel mirrors them rather than creating its own.
- Admin-managed without an integration: No connected accounting software? Your admin sets up and manages your rates under Settings > Expense fields > Tax rates.
- Rolls out by expense type: Cards, bills, and reimbursements turn on independently, so you might see rates on one expense type before another.
- Split mixed-rate expenses: Divide a multi-rate purchase into separate line items yourself (see how), or turn on Smart Tax Rates to split it automatically.
- Smart Tax Rates automation: Turn it on under Settings > AI and automations > Weel AI. It applies rates and splits mixed transactions using your receipt data, on mobile and web. See how it works for a worked example.
Good to know
- Common rate examples include 10% GST (Australia), 15% GST (New Zealand), GST Free/0%, and BAS Excluded, labelled the same way as in your accounting software.
- No Tax rate field yet? Your account is still on the free-text GST experience. See Understanding AI GST Extraction for how that works instead.
- Smart Tax Rates and Auto-extract GST are mutually exclusive. You'll see one or the other under Settings > AI and automations > Weel AI, never both. If you see Auto-extract GST, see Understanding AI GST Extraction for what that version does.
