Smart tax rates automatically applies the correct tax rate to your card transactions. It reads the receipt you upload and your business's past coding for that merchant, then splits the transaction into taxable and non-taxable line items whenever a receipt mixes both. The total tax always matches your receipt, so you don't have to work out the split yourself.
How It Works
- Automatic tax-rate coding: Applies the right tax rate to your card transactions using the receipt you upload and your business's past coding for that merchant.
-
Taxable/non-taxable splitting: Splits a mixed receipt into two line items so the totals reconcile exactly with what's on the receipt.
- For example, a supermarket invoice showing a $78.50 total and $6.52 GST doesn't show a rate per item. At 10% GST, $78.50 would normally include $7.14 of GST, so Weel works backwards from the two totals: taxable amount = $6.52 × 11 = $71.72, and GST-free amount = $78.50 − $71.72 = $6.78. Weel creates two line items: $71.72 at 10% GST (GST: $6.52), and $6.78 at GST Free.
- Works on mobile and web: Applies automatically on both the Weel mobile app and Weel web app whenever a receipt is uploaded.
- See the calculation: A chip on the split expense opens a "How was this calculated?" panel showing what Weel AI read and how it grouped the split.
- Review before you submit: You can adjust the split yourself at any point before submitting the expense.
Good to know
- Admins turn on Smart tax rates in Settings > AI and automations > Weel AI.
- Smart tax rates and Auto-extract GST are mutually exclusive: you'll only ever see one toggle here, never both. See Understanding Tax Rates in Weel (beta) for how Weel decides which one applies to your business.
- This automatic split covers card transactions only. Accounts Payable Bills don't get it. Reimbursements have their own separate automatic split (currently Australia-only) that's switched on independently of this toggle.
