Weel cards have the following limits per transaction:
- For Australian businesses: $35,000 AUD
- For New Zealand businesses: $25,000 NZD
This is enforced during authorisation (i.e. when the payment is made), so one purchase over the cap is declined even if your budget has enough funds. Admins can set a stricter limit for extra control, and Accounts Payable often suits bigger purchases better.
How It Works
- Platform cap: Every Weel card, physical, virtual, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, has the same per-transaction limit, on any plan.
- Enforced by Card Provider: The limit is set and cannot be raised by Weel or an admin, no matter your available funds.
- Custom per-transaction limits: Admins can set a stricter limit on the whole business or on one budget, for extra control, though it can never go higher than $35,000.
- Separate from budget spend limits: The per-transaction cap only limits a single swipe, and is a distinct setting from a budget's overall spend limit over a period.
- Accounts Payable for bigger purchases: Invoices and bills over $35,000 can go through Accounts Payable instead, which defaults to a $100,000 limit per invoice and can be increased on request. See Are there any limits that apply to payments?
- Merchant-split charges as a fallback: For card-present purchases with no Accounts Payable option, some merchants can process one purchase as multiple charges under the cap, though this depends on the merchant and is still subject to a separate velocity limit.
- Weel's own split transaction feature only splits an existing charge across expense codes for coding. It doesn't break one payment into multiple charges, so it's not a way around the $35,000 cap.
