Weel caps the GST you can manually enter at the transaction's exact GST rounded up to the nearest cent, which can block a correct figure straight off your receipt. That's not a bug: some receipts round GST per line item in a way that legitimately lands a cent over the cap. Here's why, and how to work around it.
How It Works
- Automatic calculation: Weel reads the GST off your receipt, or works it out from your business's default rate (10% for most Australian businesses, 15% for most New Zealand businesses, unless yours is customised; see Understanding AI GST Extraction), then caps what you can manually enter at that figure rounded up to the nearest cent, for example $15.36 on a $168.96 sale at 10% GST.
- Hard cap, not a warning: Entering more than the ceiling blocks the save immediately, on web and mobile, with an error stating the exact limit, for example, "GST cannot be more than $15.36."
- Built-in headroom: The one-cent ceiling exists because some point-of-sale terminals round GST up when printing a receipt, so a figure just over the ceiling isn't necessarily a mistake, yours or ours.
- Automatic fallback: If Weel's AI reads a GST figure above the ceiling from your receipt, it keeps the calculated default instead, so you may see the capped figure already filled in before you touch it.
- Per-line-item checking: Each line item's GST is checked against a ceiling based on that line's own amount, so a receipt that rounds several line items individually before totalling can legitimately land a cent over the ceiling calculated on the combined total.
- The fix: Split the expense into line items that match the receipt's own groupings (see How to split a transaction into multiple line items), so each line's GST is checked against its own, correctly sized ceiling.
Good to know
- Accept or correct: If the exact receipt figure isn't critical, the capped amount is a defensible GST for a fully taxable supply and the difference is a cent. If you do need the exact figure for your records, correct it in your accounting software after export instead.
- Not rounding? A mismatch bigger than a cent isn't a rounding issue. Check that the transaction amount matches what you paid and that there's no GST-free portion or a surcharge without GST, then correct the amount or category rather than splitting into line items.
- Wider scope: This cap applies to transactions in your business's default currency only, and to reimbursements and bills as well as card expenses, though how you enter GST varies elsewhere in Weel.
- Smart Tax Rates (beta): Some businesses pick a tax rate from a dropdown instead of typing a GST figure. The check there is stricter, matching the selected rate's calculation exactly. See Understanding Tax Rates: Troubleshooting and FAQs (Beta) if you're not sure which model applies to your business.
