Custom Fields and Chart of Accounts categories are separate settings in Weel. Picking a Category has no effect on a Custom Field's predefined options, and there's no way to link the two. This article explains how each works on its own, and how to get consistent, dropdown-driven data on your expenses using Custom Fields instead.
How It Works
- Custom Fields capture consistent, dropdown-driven data on every expense, completely independent of Chart of Accounts categories.
- Each Custom Field is either free text or predefined options, chosen once in Settings → Expense Fields → Custom Fields.
- Predefined options can be restricted per Budget or Subscription, never by Category. Create a separate field per use case to approximate the effect.
- Accounting-integration-synced fields (Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, NetSuite, Business Central) are always dropdowns that mirror your accounting software.
- Chart of Accounts categories only hold a name and an accounting-code mapping, set via CSV import or manually; no dropdown setting exists on a Category.
Good to know
- Custom Fields, including the option-limiting controls above, is a Premium-plan feature; it isn't available on Basic.
- Restricting a Subscription's Custom Field options doesn't affect whether its Category is locked; they're independent Advanced Controls (see Understanding Subscription Category Locking in Weel).
