Some in-store terminals ask for a PIN to complete a card payment. This isn't limited to old or unusual terminals - it's a Visa card network security rule that any terminal, of any age, can apply, and it isn't something Weel or our card partner, Nium, controls.
You're most likely to be asked for a PIN when you:
- Tap to pay contactless for more than $100: The same threshold applies in Australia and New Zealand. Overseas terminals can vary and may ask for a PIN more readily, depending on the location and payment method.
- Insert (chip-and-PIN) your physical card: A PIN is asked for as standard, regardless of the amount.
- Make several contactless taps in a row: Some terminals track a running total and prompt for a PIN once it's reached, even if no single tap was over $100.
If you pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay, your phone's Face ID, fingerprint, or passcode takes the place of a PIN, so you won't be prompted for one that way.
Since you can be asked under any of these conditions, it's worth setting up your PIN now rather than being caught out at the till.
Before you start
- You'll need the Weel mobile app for this. PIN management isn't available in the Weel web app.
Steps
- Open the Weel mobile app.
- Open the Card tab.
- Tap the Settings (cog icon) button in the top right corner.
- Tap Manage card PIN.
- Enter a 4-digit PIN.
- Confirm your PIN by entering the same 4 digits again.
- Verify it's you: this happens automatically if you have biometrics (Face ID or fingerprint) set up, or you'll be asked for a 6-digit verification code sent by SMS to the phone number on your Weel account, or generated in your authenticator app.
- Tap Done once you see the confirmation that your PIN has been changed.
What happens next
Your PIN covers both your physical and virtual card (for example, in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet), so you only need to set it up once.
