Every Weel card has an expiry date, shown as month and year (for example 01/27). Your card works until the last day of that month. At that point, Weel renews it: your card keeps the same card number and gets a new expiry date and CVV.
Weel has two types of card: your primary card, used in your mobile wallet, and secondary cards for budgets and subscriptions. If you're not sure which type you have, see Understanding Card Types in Weel: Primary vs Secondary.
How does card expiry work?
- 45 days before expiry, the card shows Expires soon instead of Active in the Weel web app and mobile app.
- From then, you or your admin can renew the card before it expires.
- Any card not renewed early is renewed automatically when it expires.
- Only the expiry date and CVV change. Your card number stays the same and your budget and available funds stay the same.
- Frozen cards are not renewed. They expire at the end of the month. Hover over a frozen card's Frozen tag to see this warning beforehand.
You'll get an email 45 days before your cards expire, and another once they've been renewed. Admins get a heads-up email listing how many cards will expire.
What do I need to do?
If you're a team member:
- In the Weel mobile app or web app, go to Cards and select Renew now on the banner at the top. For subscription cards, you can also use the banner on Subscriptions.
- Select Renew next to each card. Your primary card and secondary cards are listed separately.
- Update your new expiry date and CVV with any merchant that stores your card details, such as subscriptions or direct debits.
Closed the banner? Hover over a card's Expires soon tag and select Renew now. In the mobile app, go to Cards, then Manage your card > Renew expiring cards.
If you're an Admin:
- Open Cards and switch to Admin view.
- Look for cards marked Expires soon.
- Click the action menu icon next to the card, then Renew card.
- Check the details and select Renew card. We'll let the cardholder know so they can update any recurring payments.
Common questions
When exactly does my card stop working?
At the end of the last day of the month shown on the card, unless it's been renewed.
Why should I renew my card early?
So you can update your subscriptions and direct debits on your own schedule, instead of finding out from a declined payment.
Can I renew my own card?
Yes. You can renew it as soon as it shows Expires soon, about 45 days before it expires. Your admin can also renew it for you.
How can I see which cards are expiring?
Go to Cards in the Weel web app or mobile app. Cards nearing expiry show an Expires soon tag, and a banner at the top tells you how many of yours are expiring. Subscription cards also show it on Subscriptions.
Admins can see every expiring card in the business by switching to Admin view on Cards, and renew any of them from there: click the action menu icon next to the card, then Renew card. For a full list, go to Reports > Company cards and sort by Expiry date to see which cards expire first. The report also includes revoked and expired cards.
Does my card number change?
No. Your card keeps the same number. Only the expiry date and CVV change.
Do I need to re-add my card to Apple Pay or Google Pay?
No. Your primary card updates in Apple Pay or Google Pay by itself, so you can keep paying in-store.
Does my old expiry date and CVV keep working?
No. They stop working as soon as your card is renewed, so update any merchant that stores your card details at the same time.
Which payments will fail if I don't update my card?
Anything that stores your card details, such as subscriptions, direct debits and saved cards with online merchants.
Where do I find my new expiry date and CVV?
In the Weel mobile app or web app, open the card and select See card details.
My card is frozen. Will it be renewed?
No. Frozen cards aren't renewed. Unfreeze the card before the end of the month and it will renew automatically. Otherwise it expires and can't be renewed, so you'll need a new card from your admin.
Can I renew an expired card?
No. Expired cards no longer show on Cards or Subscriptions in Weel. If you still need the card, ask your admin for a new one. Admins can find expired cards in Reports > Company cards, with the status Expired.
Is there a fee?
No. Renewing a card is free.
