A merchant refund still comes through even if the card it was originally charged to has since been cancelled, so there's nothing extra you need to do to receive it. Refunds don't credit the card directly. They credit your business's overall Account Balance, and that process doesn't check the card's status at all.
How It Works
- Refunds are matched to your original transaction and credited straight to your Account Balance, not to the card itself.
- Because of that, a refund lands the same way whether the card is still active, frozen, or has since been cancelled.
- If the original purchase came from a Budget, its spending capacity is restored automatically, the same as any other refund.
- Refunds typically take 3-5 business days, occasionally up to 10, since timing depends on the merchant and their bank rather than Weel.
Good to know
- The one exception is your whole Weel account being closed, not just a single card cancelled, something Support manages directly. A refund arriving after that point can be very difficult for us to return.
- While an account closure is still in progress and not yet final, any refund that arrives is still swept out to your nominated bank account rather than being stranded.
- Planning to close your Weel account and expecting an outstanding refund? Let Support know so they can factor it into the timing.
