Weel cards sometimes need a PIN for in-store payments, a Visa card network security rule rather than anything Weel or the terminal decides. This can happen for contactless taps over a set limit, chip payments, or after several taps in a row. Setting up your PIN in advance means you're never caught out at the till.
How It Works
- Contactless tap limit: Tapping over about $100 can trigger a PIN, the same threshold applies in Australia and New Zealand. Overseas payments will vary, and often require a PIN to be entered depending on the location and payment method.
- Chip and insert: Inserting your physical card asks for a PIN as standard, whatever the payment amount.
- Cumulative tap tracking: Some terminals total several taps in a row, so a PIN can appear on a lower amount.
- Any terminal, any age: This is a card network rule, so even brand-new terminals apply it the same way.
- One PIN, both cards: Your PIN covers your physical and virtual Weel card, so you only set it up once.
- Simple phone payments: Apple Pay and Google Pay confirm with Face ID, fingerprint, or your passcode when no PIN is needed.
Good to know
- Weel and our card partner, Nium, don't set or control the PIN threshold, it's decided by the card network and payment terminal.
- Set up your PIN in advance, even if you mostly pay by tapping your phone, so you're ready if one is needed.
