You can issue a virtual Weel card to an employee based anywhere in the world, not just Australia or New Zealand. A physical card is the one exception: it can only ship to an Australian address, so it's not available to an overseas-based employee. Here's how each works, and why.
How It Works
- Weel doesn't check an employee's location to invite them, assign them the Cards payment type, or issue their virtual card: there's no address or residency field on the employee record. The only requirement is that your business is registered in Australia or New Zealand.
- Once issued, a virtual card works overseas the same as it does at home: Visa network, 0.95% foreign exchange fee on foreign-currency transactions. See An Overview of Using Your Weel Card Overseas.
- Physical cards can't ship overseas, for any employee or business, including a New Zealand business (where Physical Cards isn't available yet). Every delivery address must be a valid Australian address, whether a card is issued one at a time or in bulk. See Understanding Physical Card Shipping and How to Issue a Physical Card.
Good to know
- This is different to verifying the business itself: An owner, director, or beneficial owner going through Weel's business verification needs a residential address in Australia or New Zealand, but only for that small group, not employees being issued a card.
- Every employee still goes through an individual compliance check with Weel's card-issuing partner before their card is issued, wherever they're based. This isn't affected by location, but it's a genuine per-person check, so treat it as generally yes, not an absolute guarantee.
- If an overseas-based employee needs a physical card for in-store payments, there's currently no workaround, such as shipping to an Australian contact and forwarding it on. To invite them in the first place, see How to Invite Staff Members into Your Weel Account; the invite flow doesn't ask about or restrict on their location.
